Week of January 8th

Happy New Year to all!  We hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday season.  2018 started off great! The kids were so happy to be back and ready to learn.  Mrs. T and I commented many times today on how engaged the students were and what a lovely first day it was.  By quiet time, many were ready to take a little nap and rest their body.

Our letter of the week is "y" and our word of the week is "my".  We learned a song to help us always remember how to spell 'my'.  Please ask your children to sing the song to you.  Our sk friends wrote some pretty fantastic sentences using our word of the week.  Check out the samples in the pictures below.

We also revisited 10 frames today and explored some bigger numbers (11-15).  The students used the gems to represent the number given.  Please continue to explore numbers at home.  Make it fun so the kids will want to engage in learning all about numbers.

We had an issue with one of our reading programs called Raz- Kids but it has now been resolved.  We will be sending home information regarding Raz- Kids and how to get started from home if you wish to.  It is an online reading program that is fun for the kids.

Next Monday, we will be sending our home reading program with the SK students only.  Each Sk student will be bringing  home a duotang with one book per week.  You will find instructions for this program inside the duotang.  It is very simple and allows you a few minutes to snuggle up with your child an read. Please ensure that the folder and snuggle book comes back to school every Friday.

Today we welcomed Mrs. Hanna as our new Vice- Principal.  We look forward to seeing her in our classroom and working with her this year.  She is coming to read to us next week and we are SO excited!

Reminders:

  • Please send back blankets and spare clothing if you have not done so already.
  • We will continue to stay outdoors each morning so please have your child dressed for the weather.
  • If a snow day (bus cancellations) occurs on a Tuesday, pizza day is cancelled so ensure that your child has a lunch if they are coming to school.  Pizza will be delivered the following day.

  • Kindergarten Registration:  Registration for junior kindergarten takes place during the week of January 15-19th, at St Gabriel.  Please call the school at 613-271-6181 to schedule an appointment.  Registration will also be accepted anytime during the school year if you happen to miss the official January registration period.  If you live in the area of the NEW Kanata North Catholic School you will register here at St Gabriel.

    Week of December 11

We are so excited to perform for you on Friday.  The kids have been practicing and doing a great job remembering the words and actions to our songs.   Feel free to dress your child up in Christmas colours or anything festive for the concert.

Today we were busy measuring dinosaurs with cubes, learning about the nativity and experimenting with chalk on paper.  It was a very productive day!

We will not have a new letter or word of the week until the new year but please continue to practice letter recognition and letter sounds with your child.

As the snow and cold weather hits us, please send your child dressed in full winter gear (snowpants, hat, gloves, boots, coat) as well as pack spare gloves and socks.  Let's hope that Mother Nature is kind to us tomorrow!

    Reminder:

Our Christmas concert will be held in Room 138 at 2 pm.  We would love for you to stay afterwards and do a craft with your child.  The more the merrier!

We sent home a hard copy of the Advent letter that was posted on the blog last week.  Our class is collecting child sized toothbrushes.  If you can help, it will be much appreciated.

    Blog Update Notifications

We finally resolved the issue of not sending notifications when a new blog post has been posted.  You will now find on the right-hand side a spot to enter your email address.  It will send you a notification to that email when the blog has been updated.

Here are some pictures from yesterday:

    Week of December 4th

This week we will not have a word or letter of the week.  Instead, we are focusing on learning our songs for the Christmas concert. The children will be singing these songs in their sleep after the concert is done!!!  They are doing such a great job and it is going to be ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!

If you plan on attending on December 15th (Friday), please send back your form indicating that you will be joining us.

Please see the note below regarding our Christmas Hamper collection:

    Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Advent season has arrived and Christmas is just around the corner. Each of the classes at St. Gabriel School will be involved in our Advent project to help those in need. Each class, from Kindergarten through grade six, will contribute to allow us to prepare a “hamper” for needy families from our adopted school, St. Elizabeth.

Each student is being asked to bring in a specific item for the food hamper. Additionally, a minimum donation of $2.00 for the family would also be most appreciated. Monies collected will go towards the purchase of a grocery store gift card for each family, so the family can purchase a turkey and fresh fruit and vegetables.

We encourage the students to complete a chore at home to earn their own money, so that they experience the gift of giving. Your child is invited to bring in 2 child sized toothbrushes. We will be collecting the hamper items and money from Monday,December 4th until Friday,December 15th.

** Please note we also welcome donations of hats and mittens to send to families in need in our school board.

Thank you for your generosity and support during the Advent Season.

    God Bless,

    St. Gabriel Catholic School Staff
